KANDI PERAHARA

Kandi`s biggest attraction is the “esala perahara” It is a 10 days pageant which leads up to until the full moon 

of the month of July. There are two kinds of pageants. The first is called the “kumbal perahara” which parades 

for the 5 nights. Then the “randoli perahara” which parade the lasts nights. The last nights perahara is the grandest of all. Randoli means the `queen<sup>`</sup>s palanquin`. Up to 1775 A.D.palanquins were carried alongside the 
elephants in the perahara. The elephants are dressed in colorful silk costumes. The numbers of elephants 

increase daily marking the perahara more spectacular each night. The maligawa perahara is followed by those 
of the 4 dewales (Hindu temples) it is illuminated by torch bearers. Because it is held in night. The 

government to be solely responsible for the protection, preservation and management of this beguiled wild 

heritage of ours.
